Can Tamas Kadar make his mark this season?

Continuing with the theme of centre-backs from my last article, the name of Tamas Kadar kept cropping up when several people mentioned our other choices for that position. I felt it would be appropriate to discuss whether or not Kadar will get some sort of opportunity this season.

Kadar got the opportunity whilst we were in the Championship to rack up some appearances for the Toon. Although he was down the pecking order when it came to the likes of who would start at centre-back, whenever he was picked Kadar put in strong performances to show the ability that he has when playing in his favoured position. All in all the Hungarian made 13 appearances for us during that Championship winning season.

I remember seeing him play for the Toon at Ashton Gate in the 2-2 draw between us and Bristol City. Kadar was very strong in the air and dealt with the balls that the opposition sent in very well. He didn’t look out of place within the team and during that game he stopped Bristol from gaining an even bigger advantage over us.

Tamas Kadar’s opportunities this last season were somewhat limited. He played in the Carling Cup victory over Accrington Stanley and the defeat by Arsenal. Since those appearances though, Kadar had been out on loan to Huddersfield Town where, unfortunately, he was struck with bad luck; he only made two appearances for Lee Clark’s side due to suffering a hamstring injury that required him to return to Newcastle.

The young Magyar can also play at left-back so he has more than string to his bow. However I feel that his stronger position is centre-back and that is where I think he would prefer to play if he gets an opportunity in the forthcoming season.

Kadar participated in the European Championships for Hungary over the summer. I watched the games that he was involved and although he did not have to deal with much, what he did deal with showed his composure and the talent that he has.

The lad does have ability and he is only at the age of twenty-one which allows him more development time. His opportunities may only come in lesser games such as the Carling Cup but if he can prove to Alan Pardew that he is a good quality centre-back then perhaps we will get to see more of him. The coming season may throw up different scenarios where we may have to call on some of our younger players to participate in games.

Kadar is very keen to prove to Pardew that he should get a chance in the Premier League. Speaking after playing a behind-closed-doors match Kadar stated: “Hopefully I can break through and get games for the first-team”, clearly stating that he is keen to make an impression on Pardew in an attempt to make him consider using him as part of the first-team squad.

With Sol Campbell released by the club earlier on in the transfer window, Kadar perhaps may be able to get more of an opportunity in defence. However that may not be the case as there are talks of Lee Clark being interested in taking the player back on loan again. That would be no bad thing for Tamas as he would gain experience playing at centre-back or left-back enabling his game to improve.

Although with Shane Ferguson breaking through as a candidate for left-back perhaps Kadar will find that a no-go position. Versatility is valuable to the team and Kadar has demonstrated that he can play there effectively. However with Ferguson staking his claims for that position perhaps Kadar should stick to improving his abilities in his favoured position in order to have a breakthrough season.

The first pre-season match us nearly upon us and with Alan Pardew set to field two completely different XI’s in both halves then that may present a chance for Kadar to show the manager what he is all about. If Tamas Kadar shows his worth during the pre-season then he may find himself more and more involved in the first-team this coming season.
