Bob Moncur keen to see youngsters develop
BOB MONCUR wants to see Newcastle United’s plans to develop their own youngsters come to fruition this season – regardless of the tough scrap that may lie in wait in the Premier League.
United fans’ current cause for concern is the lack of depth in the Toon squad with Steven Taylor looking certain to miss the start of the season and the name of Sol Campbell being mentioned as a possible signing.
Moncur, however, has identified United’s young Hungarian defender Tamas Kadar – yet to taste defeat in a league game for the Magpies – as one for NOW rather than the future.
Moncur told the Chronicle: “Kadar, for me, is a player I liked the look of last season and, in the event of injuries to Taylor, Coloccini or Williamson, I would have thought he was capable of stepping into the breach.
“I’m not going to tell Chris Hughton how to pick his team, but Kadar showed me enough last season in terms of technical ability and defensive awareness to suggest he can cut it at the top level.
“I’d also rather see some of the younger players get their chance if I’m honest.
“But if we’re signing players then I’d like to see players who have a career in front of them rather than behind them.
“Bringing in players like that could be a backward step.
“So giving Kadar a chance seems to be a real option. He’s 20 now, so if he’s not going to get his chance, then when?”
Kadar is currently nursing a groin injury but will be available by the time Newcastle head to Old Trafford for the opener with Manchester United on August 16.
However, Moncur feels United should not be afraid to field younger players.
And with Haris Vuckic, James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson and Joan Edmundsson already handed run-outs in pre-season, United boss Hughton has plenty of food for thought.
Moncur said: “If Tamas, or any other young player, goes in at Manchester United it will be brilliant for them.
“They won’t be scarred by it – they’re aspiring young professionals at the end of the day, and going to Man United is what being a player is all about.
“I went when I was younger and played at Man United. I loved it.
“If they are scarred by it, then it shows perhaps they aren’t cut out for it.
“I don’t see a risk in playing young players – I never have. I was captain of Newcastle at 22.
“If you take a hiding in football and you lose it will make you mentally stronger, in my opinion.
“In the long run that can only be good for Newcastle.”
